I am running for this position because I am passionate about educational leadership,
student learning and student achievement. I want to provide energetic, visionary and
supportive leadership to every student, family, teacher, tax payer and educational
leader in Lake County. The challenge and opportunity to enhance the quality of life
in through the education process of Lake County is a great one. I believe and have
experienced that effective, supportive leadership is the foundation of success for
any individual, family, community, or organization. I truly enjoy being consistently
present and visible to the people I serve. Empowering and respecting the voice of all
stakeholders concerned with education will be a mainstay of my service! There is nothing
more rewarding than being a member on a problem solving team and obtaining results based
upon an enthusiastic team effort! "With the presence of true leadership in ones life the
ability to achieve unlimited possibilities can and will be realized by each and every
one of our students."
Currently, I am the Principal and instructional leader of North Chicago Community High
School. My team is providing the leadership for a cultural transformation and
renaissance in student learning. We are in a complete school wide transformation and
the change is remarkable. Our reading scores improved 15 points, we met our AYP challenge
in our graduation rate for the first time in years, and we have restructured our entire math
department based on the current data and challenge to improve. Our cultural challenge to create a
warm, student centered, supportive environment has already proven successful. Since taking over
in the leadership role we placed first in Lake County in a high school fall attendance challenge
two years in a row. Our students love coming to school!
I earned my Doctorate degree in Educational Leadership and superintendent endorsement from
National–Louis University, Masters Degree in Administration from Northeastern Illinois University,
Bachelor's Degrees in History and Business Finance from Mt.St. Mary's University, and Secondary
education certification from DePaul University. I have taught at the 3rd,6th,7th,8,th,9th,and 10th
grade levels. I have been an assistant principal and dean of students at the K-8 and high school
levels. I have served as a principal and instructional leader at the primary (K-5 level) middle
school (6-8 level) and high school (9-12) level.
In the corporate world I have owned my own small business, held real-estate licenses
in Illinois and Virginia, and competed at the professional level on the European
Tennis circuit. My wife's name is Wendy, a primary educator for 15 years, and my
daughter Rose is 7 years old. One of the highlights and defining moments of my life
was when I had the honor and privilege to work with Arthur Ashe. Arthur Ashe was a
true humanitarian, social justice advocate and the number 1 ranked tennis player in
the world. I spent four summers in the inner city of Alexandria, Virginia working for
the National Junior Tennis League, a not for profit program teaching tennis to young
people. Arthur founded NJTL to serve those children who otherwise would have never
experienced tennis, life lessons in teaming or sportsmanship development.
I would like to offer my services to all the people and school systems of Lake County.
Together we will identify the challenges that our community is faced with and by
supporting and empowering our team we solve each challenge that confronts all of us.
