MCDERMOTT DECLARES CANDIDACY FOR LAKE COUNTY SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS

NORTH CHICAGO, IL – Citing his desire to improve the educational experience for students, improve student test scores and empower educators across Lake County, Dan McDermott announced his candidacy for Lake County Superintendent of Schools. He filed paperwork to run in the Democratic Primary on February 2nd, 2010. Roycealee Wood currently holds the office of Superintendent.
"Lake County schools are nowhere near meeting their full potential. Students aren't receiving the support they need, teachers have no input in school curriculums and the superintendent’s office continues to neglect underrepresented communities in Lake County," said McDermott. "If we want our schools to give every child the tools to succeed in life, we need a change. That change has to start from the top."
McDermott, a former history teacher and current principal of North Chicago Community High School, pointed to the need for more student support services as his primary reason for running. If elected, McDermott pledged to expand support and intervention services for students in Lake County.
"Today, the students most in need of support and intervention programs are being neglected by their schools and by the county," McDermott said. "This is completely unacceptable. Once elected, I will make sure every student’s needs are met by establishing countywide support programs."
Dan McDermott currently serves as Principal at North Chicago Community High School. Before that he taught history at the primary and secondary levels. McDermott first started teaching at St. Ignatius College Prep and Francis W. Parker School. He then moved to the West Side of Chicago where he taught for eight years. He then became a school administrator. He has been married to his wife Wendy for nine years and they have a daughter Rose. McDermott is a graduate of Mount St. Mary's University. He earned his Master's degree at Northeastern Illinois University and a Ph.D. at National-Louis University.
